La Paz, Bolivia

13smLa Paz is a crazy, fascinating city.  I was reminded while wandering the streets of La Paz of a quote from the movie Clueless that I think describes the city perfectly.  “She’s a full-on Monet… It’s like the painting, see? From far away, it’s okay, but up close, it’s a big old mess”.

Ok, maybe that’s a little harsh. Continue reading “La Paz, Bolivia”

Sucre, Bolivia

19smI do not believe that I can give an honest assessment of what the city of Sucre is like.  It would be like a tourist in New York spending 5 days in the city without ever leaving midtown, except to visit upstate for a day.  This is essentially what my time was like in Sucre.  I spent entire days only in the city center.  I can however say that I really enjoyed my time in Sucre, and if my travel time was not becoming increasingly limited, I would have like to spend a lot more time there.  I think it may be my favorite of the big cities I have visited in South America so far. Bolivian Jeep Tour, Day 2

24smDay 2, more beauty, more mountains, more deserts, more alpacas, fewer trees, fewer and fewer and fewer signs of life.  I was actually quite astounded by the complete lack of human touch that stretched on for hours and hours, days in fact. Continue reading “Bolivian Jeep Tour, Day 2”

Bolivian Jeep Tour, day 1

12smThe main thing I was looking forward to in Bolivia was the 4 day Jeep trek.  I did not know a ton about it beforehand.  I knew that every traveler I met who was heading to Bolivia, was heading there for this trek.  I also knew I would end up at Salar De Uyuni (the world’s largest salt flat) at some point during the journey.  I do not know exactly what I expected, but I did not expect Bolivia to be filled with so much natural beauty.  My trek from Tupiza to Uyuni was absolutely one of the coolest things I have ever done.  For this post, I will share my experience from Day 1 of 4. Route 68, from Salta to Cafayate

7sm

If you find yourself in the provence of Salta, Argentina, I suggest you take this beautiful drive between the small town of Cafayate and the Capital city of Salta.  I took a day trip from Salta with my new amigo, Gal.  Cafayate is a lovely little pueblo to wander around and visit local wineries.  But the highlight of this excursion is the road itself.   Continue reading “Route 68, from Salta to Cafayate”

Salta, Argentina – The City

4smSalta is both a provence, and a city in Argentina.  The city is a great central location for exploring the natural beauty of the region.  I enjoyed the city very much.  The main plaza reminded me a lot of being in Europe, with it’s ornate architecture and cobblestone streets.  The churches are all painted beautiful colors adding to the picturesque atmosphere in Salta. I also loved that the city was small and walkable, with everything easily accessible.   Continue reading “Salta, Argentina – The City”

Mendoza, Argentina

18smI had an absolutely fantastic time in Mendoza.  The city itself was a nice, walkable town filled with shops, parks, and the most amazing food market (more like a flea market for various food vendors).  But the reason for visiting Mendoza is not for the city, but rather to see the provence surrounding the city.  Vino.  Mendoza is the Argetinian wine Country. Iguazu Falls, Brazilian Side

I spent three days exploring Iguazu Falls and it’s subtropical rainforest surroundings.  This place can be described as nothing short of magical.  “Magical”  seems to be the only word I can find that comes close to describing my time here.  Each of my three days was an incredibly unique experience.  For this reason, I need to do a separate post about each day here.  I begin on day 1, by exploring the Brazilian side of the falls. Continue reading “Iguazu Falls, Brazilian Side”

Punte Del Este, Uruguay

1sm It seems now like each place I go is harder to leave behind than the last.  I am really going to miss Punte Del Este.   Continue reading “Punte Del Este, Uruguay”

Murphey’s Law

Ok, I hate to be a complainer. I really do. But that’s what this post is. A big vent session.

For all of you who think traveling is all fun and games, leisure and pleasure… read on. Continue reading “Murphey’s Law”
